After his wife's death, Mark, a grieving steeplejack, retreats to the top of a 300-foot chimney, where work offers an escape from the grief and obligations waiting below. But when a self-destructive act leaves him solely responsible for the son he has spent years avoiding, he is forced to confront the very life he's spent a lifetime climbing away from.
Synopsis
Still reeling from the death of his wife, steeplejack Mark withdraws into himself, straining already fragile relationships with his mother, his sons, and the local community. He buries himself in his work and numbs his evenings at the Working Men’s Club.
When his long-time co-worker retires, Mark is left to dismantle a 300-foot chimney alone, a dangerous job made more shameful by its location on a recently closed coal mine. The unexpected return of his younger brother, Charlie, stirs old resentment. as Charlie helps Mark at work, the brothers slowly begin to repair their bond, and Mark takes tentative steps towards healing. For a brief moment, the family begins to breathe again.
After a violent altercation leaves Charlie hospitalised, Mark is left to care for his youngest son, Bobby. Ill- equipped, volatile and still grieving, Mark struggles to provide the care Bobby needs. Yet as father and son spend time together, a fragile closeness starts to form. But Mark’s self-destructive habits put Bobby in danger, forcing him to confront the damage he has caused as a father, a son, a brother, and a member of the community.
